Greenwood Great House is one of the finest antique museums in the Caribbean and the greatest Great House in Jamaica. The house was built during the era of elegance and brutality. Greenwood has maintained an atmosphere of the 19th century and continues to impress its visitors. The house was built by Richard Barrett of Wimpole Street in London in 1800. The house still has many of its original furniture and the largest and rarest musical instruments and books on the island. The house is a must-see for antique lovers and anyone wanting to experience a piece of 19th Century Jamaica. The property is still occupied by its current owners. Greenwood is set on a beautifully manicured garden and the top veranda gives visitors a 180 degree panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea.The tour takes place at a relaxed pace, giving visitors time to explore everything. The Barrett family treated their slaves relatively well and provided them with an education, which was quite unusual at the time. As a mark of respect, the Greenwood Great House was spared damage during the slave rebellion in Christmas 1831, which saw many plantation buildings burned to the ground.
